FURNITURE BY DESIGN

Jennifer Ashton September 13, 2023

Are you underway redesigning your home or building from scratch with an architect/building team? Do not underestimate the luscious layer of including bespoke furniture in your plan. Your interior environment is the foundation to build your signature style. A beautifully furnished abode is like the final layer to an extraordinary dining experience where the dessert builds on the foundation that can be the sweetest part.

It is natural to think about your existing furniture working into a newly crafted interior with pristine walls that are perhaps beautifully plastered, and every hard finish stands out like a fantastic piece of exquisite jewelry. But then the reality of placing a dated recliner or a weathered sofa that has seen better days will not add to the magic of the new surroundings. They only pop out more distinctly. Your home may be stylistically in a modern aesthetic. Still, your old furniture comes from the passed down Victorian era or leftover 1980s brands, and there is no bridge to cross that will transition these different worlds into modern.

JAI has been working for many years in collaboration with regional talent in the design trades, including outstanding artisans, metalsmiths and amazing vendors when it comes to selecting beautiful textiles and materials for a unique furniture design for clients. The cost elements are part of the equation in pursuing a unique furniture piece. Our team is well aquainted on budget aspects that add to the design equation. The collaboration often involves a balance of design creativity with an exploration process for finding materials and the process for artisans to craft the details to create the perfect balance for each piece. The design parameters are exciting challenges and make the process more meaningful in creating the perfect piece for each individual client.

While going to a retail brand name store and picking out furniture works in some ways for instant gratification, it is a different approach from the world of handcrafted artisan furniture design. The region of Santa Fe is special in the arts and creative pursuits and custom furniture is no exception. In studio or at a project site we work on the details to provide samples of color, dimensions, and style. The process always starts with an idea from an inspiration image or an element like a piece of hardware or wood carving detail that sparks the design style. In addition to custom make a piece does not take a longer time than ordering a piece from another location that gets shipped. In fact it is cost and time saving for the transport since it saves on trucking items across the country.

The next step is to draw out the design; whether the custom piece is a dining room table, desk or built in cabinet, it all starts with the drawing that includes getting the scale and proportions right. Then selecting finishes, colors and style that will add to the other materials that may include seeded glass, wood, or possibly metal. All of the big and small details are what make your piece bespoke.

Owning a piece that is artful and handcrafted for your home at one time or another is a fabulous design experience and honors the preservation of an art that should stay with us for a lifetime.

Start with the Art!! It can also be creatively interesting to customize a furniture pieces around art. This adds to the beauty and balance of a space especially at Foyer or above a dining buffet.
